Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago
in the mid Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the Autonomous regions of Portugal,
with Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island being the only inhabited islands.
Madeira is an archipelago with volcanic origins from a Hot Spot, so is
not geographically part of a specific continent, but Madeira belongs and
has belonged ethnically, culturally, economically and politically to Europe
for 600 years despite being geographically closer to Africa. Madeira is
part of Portugal, and as such a part of the European Union, as an Outermost
Region.
Madeira was rediscovered by Portuguese
sailors some time between 1418 and 1420. The archipelago is considered
to be the first discovery of the exploratory period initiated by Henry
the Navigator of Portugal. It is a popular year-round resort, noted for
its Madeira wine, flowers, and embroidery artisans, as well as its New
Year's Eve celebrations that feature a spectacular fireworks show, which
is the largest in the world according to the Guinness World Records. Its
harbour – Funchal – is important due to its commercial and passenger traffic
and for being a major stopover for cruisers en route from Europe to the
Caribbean. |

Echium is a beautiful house with two separate apartments. The
top apartment, with its classical decoration, has a terrace with view to
the sea and over the garden. The more modern decorated bottom apartment
has direct entrance to the garden from the lounge and bed room. There
are possibilities for grilling, relaxing in the garden with its pond and
just enjoying life. Vila Echium provides the extra service of a maid
each day (except on Sundays) at no extra cost. Cleaning of the apartments,
change of linen, provision of blankets, and other amenities are all provided
for and are included in the daily rate. The distance to the sea is 500
meters. The golf courts are 5 and 10 minutes away by car. There is
diving, tennis, walking, jogging and sailing sports available in the immediate
area. Funchal is the city centre for shopping, 5 minutes away. |

Unlike
on the Portuguese mainland, villas with private pools for holiday rentals
remain something of a rarity on Madeira. This splendid new villa is in
the sunny south-west corner of the island. Casa da Rocha stands on
the outskirts of the small village of Prazeres, in a privileged residential
neighbourhood close to a quiet country road. The villas elevated hillside
setting grants it splendid views down towards the ocean, especially from
the large private swimming pool and from the upper-floor balcony that runs
the length of the house.
The
interiors are just as appealing, with natural stone walls, wooden beams
and attractive terracotta floor tiles lending a sense of traditional charm
that is often lacking in newly built villas. Downstairs, the comfortably
furnished living room boasts a lovely fireplace as well as a TV.

furnished and equipped. Situated on the island’s south east coast snuggling
between a valley and a bay, Machico was the first settlement on the island
when João Gonçalves Zargo landed in the bay in 1419. Although
designated as the second city of Madeira, it is really a large town. An
excellent road infrastructure provides quick access to all parts of the
island. Madeira International Airport is only 10 minutes drive, and the
capital Funchal, can be reached in 20 minutes using the fast new dual carriageway.
This provides a unique opportunity to live away from the traffic and noise
of the capital, yet be within easy each of it. Properties of this size
with such a large plot of land would cost substantially more money in Funchal.
Approximately 10 minutes drive is the Santo da Serra Golf Course.

entrance of Porto da Cruz. It is a large property with a high level comfortable

the winter all the rooms are heated by a device that recovers the heat
released by the fireplace, and automatically distributes it to the rooms.
The sitting-room is equipped with TVset, DVD, Stereo System, Computer,
Internet WI-FI, Safety Deposit Box, WC, and the kitchen is fully equipped.
Outside you can enjoy the private pool and the sunbathing area with views

high. The house is part of a small set of ancient houses that were rebuilt
