The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km (930 mi) from Lisbon and about 3,900 km (2,400 mi) from the east coast of North America. The Monchique Islet on Flores Island, located at 31° 16' 24" W is regarded as the westernmost point in Europe, even though from a geographical standpoint, the two westernmost Azorean islands (Flores and Corvo) actually lie on the North American plate. The current Azores' main industries are tourism, cattle raising for milk and meat, and fishing.

The nine major Azorean islands and the eight small Formigas extend for more than 600 km (373 mi) and lie in a northwest- southeast direction. The vast extent of the islands defines an immense exclusive economic zone of 1,100,000 km2 (420,000 sq mi). The westernmost point of this area is 3,380 km (2,100 mi) from the North American continent. All of the islands have volcanic origins, although Santa Maria also has some reef contribution. Mount Pico on Pico Island, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft) in altitude, is the highest in all of Portugal. The Azores are actually the tops of some of the tallest mountains on the planet, as measured from their base at the bottom of the ocean. The archipelago forms the Autonomous Region of Azores, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal.

Because these once uninhabited, remote islands were settled sporadically over a span of two centuries, their culture, dialect, cuisine and traditions vary considerably from island to island. Farming and fishing are key industries that support the Azorean economy. 240,000 Azoreans live within the archipelago’s 868 square miles.

Sleeps 2-3. ca. 70 sqm.  It is a primarily residential area, but there is a bar/corner shop about 500 meters away, the supermarket is 1.5kms away. A car is not essential, it is gently stroll downhill to the main street, but quite steep walking back, however taxis cost 4 euro from the main street to the house. The route to and from the supermarket is flat, it is possible to go down hill to main street then around to the supermarket and back to the house, about half an hour stroll. Down in the city centre, there in the marina which has a bar, the harbour where it is possible to buy fish from one of the auction houses, hot rocks restaurant canto do duc, the famous Peter cafe sport. These are all between 1 and 1.5 kms away from the house.   Sleeps 3.
2 bedroom apartment in Horta (Ref: 51891) Self catering apartment in Horta
Beautifully furnished, close to everything, but quiet. 2 bedrooms, with 2 bathrooms, air conditioning, free wireless internet and DVD, very nice.  The bedrooms are very large with built in wardrobes, every room has its own bathroom and toilet. One of them is en-suite. The previous owner built this house for himself and his family and lived in it until he built a new one which he moved into in March 2008. Everything has been done to the highest standard possible. It is a primarily residential area, but there is a bar/corner shop about 500 mtrs away, the supermarket is 1.5kms away. A car is not essential, but it is advised. It is a gentle stroll downhill to the main street, but quite steep walking back up, however taxis are about 4 euros from the main street to the house.   Sleeps 4.

Modern detached villa in the hamlet of Fajã, in a magnificent quiet location and enjoying a nice sea view. It is 200 m from a black sand and rock beach, 25 km from Horta and 15 km from the airport. With a living area of 70 m2 and a surrounding garden with 120 m2, property consists of 1 double room, 1 twin room, 1 shower room, living/dining room with open plan kitchen and an outside terrace with sea view, garden furniture and barbecue. The Aldeia da Cuada is a paradise within a paradise: the Island of Flores. Casa Azul is located in the picturesque village of Costa, on the south western coast of the Flores Island. Costa is an untouched small rural hamlet surrounded by high mountains and with a breathtaking sea view. Nature lovers have a lot to discover around here. Next shopping facilities and restaurants can be found in Lajes, 7 Km distant. Casa Azul is a typical Azorean stone house, which was completed renovated to include today's comfort and facilities. It consists of a large living/dining room with integrated and well equipped kitchenette. Surrounded by cosy settees, there is a historical bread baking oven in the living room, which is now used as an open fire place and a grill. There is also a radio/CD-player. The two bedrooms (one double, one twin) have direct access to the terrace. The large recently tiled and renovated bathroom includes bath tub, bidet, wash basin and toilet.  Sleeps 4.

Casa da Lomba - Casas Novas V2, (Ref: 12964) Self catering cottage in Sao Miguel island

Charming cottage located in the western end of Sao Miguel island, above the small village of Genets and 300 m above the sea level. Very quiet location, in rural environment and with a beautiful sea view. To the nearest beach (Masteries) is 10 driving minutes. The lake at the crater of Sate Cicadas is 2 walking hours or 10 driving minutes distant. In Genets you find a supermarket, a bank teller, post office and chemist, as well as Ferrari, with lava formations and a hot seawater spring. The capital city Ponte Delgado, with its international airport and all sorts of shopping facilities is 25 km. The recently built cottage (100 m² living area) is located in its own grounds of 2,700 m², with a magnificent sea view. A wide open space accommodates living room with radio/CD-player, dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. There is one double room (bed 180 x 200 cm) and one twin room (beds 90 x 200 cm).  Sleeps 4.
