HOTELS IN CARCASSONNE, FRANCE |
|
Carcassonne is a fortified
French town in the Aude département, of which it is the prefecture,
in the former province of Languedoc. It is separated into the fortified
Cité de Carcassonne and the more expansive lower city, the ville
basse. The folk etymology – involving a châtelaine named Carcas,
a ruse ending a siege and the joyous ringing of bells ("Carcas sona") -
though memorialized in a neo-Gothic sculpture of Mme. Carcas on a column
near the Narbonne Gate, is of modern invention. The fortress, which was
thoroughly restored in 1853 by the theorist and architect Eugène
Viollet-le-Duc, was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in
1997. |

Chinon is a commune in the
Indre-et-Loire department in central France. In the Middle Ages,
Chinon developed especially during the reign of Henry II (Henry Plantagenêt,
Count of Anjou, crowned King of England in 1154). The castle was rebuilt

Chinon was included in the French
royal estates in 1205. It was during the Hundred Years' War that the town

faithful to him and he made lengthy stays at his court in Chinon. In 1429,
Joan of Arc came here to acknowledge him. From the sixteenth century,
Chinon was no longer a royal residence.
Chinon is located in the heart of
the Val de Loire area, within the Vallée de la Vienne (Vienne River
