There are altogether too
many reasons for choosing to holiday on the sunshine island of Lanzarote
in the coming year. As the fourth largest of the Canaries the island
offers a year round raft of events and festivals and entertainment for
visitors to enjoy, along with a tapestry of local culture, an idyllic climate
and great beaches to relax and soak up the glorious sunshine.
There
are plenty of good and affordable accommodation options available on the
island too. With villas in Lanzarote having rental prices from around
€350 per week and rental properties (apartments and self catering
villas) located in all of the main resorts as well as across the Lanzarote
countryside if you want too enjoy the peace and quiet and stunning scenery.
If you need car hire in Lanzarote
this is reasonably priced too so it's easy and affordable, and there is
no excuse to get out and about and real taste the culture of the island
by enjoying one or more of the many local fiestas and festivals taking
place throughout the 2010 season.
The year kicks off in style
with the Canarian Music Festival, the 26th annual Festival de Musica Canarias.
This is a prestigious event that is staged throughout all the island in
the archipelago, offering visitors and the musical enthusiasts amongst
you a showcase of contemporary classics, you'll have the opportunity to
enjoy some of the best classical music sounds around as Lanzarote plays
host to world class performers such as The Prague National Chamber Theatre
Orchestra.
The carnaval season kicks
off across the island in February, and whilst the celebrations are not
quite as flamboyant or riotous as those staged in Rio they still attract
thousands of revellers and are a spectacle to behold. The only downside
is that as so many of the locals get involved work across the island tends
to grind to a bit of a halt and service may be a little slower than normal.
Carnaval
events are staggered - and take place across different towns and resorts
on different days. As you would expect the biggest and best events
are reserved for Lanzarote's capital of Arrecife as well as the oldest
resort on the island which is Puerto del Carmen. Expect to see huge
decorated floats and marching batacuda drum bands beating out a frenetic
rhythm that invokes the party spirit.
The event attracts thousands
of the islands residents and tourists alike with many donning colourful
and resplendent costumes and partying late into the night.
During May the going gets
tough for some visitors as Lanzarote is the chosen venue for one of the
toughest triathlons in the world. The annual Iron Man event gets
underway this month and attract thousands of super fit competitors from
around the world eager to take the title in a gruelling contest that includes
a 2km swim, an energy sapping 180km bike ride, and if that were not enough
it is finally topped off with a full marathon which takes place along the
seafront in Puerto del Carmen.
June is considered to be
one of the most significant months in the Catholic calendar and this is
also when the fiesta of Corpus Christ takes place every year. Corpus Christi
is one of the most colourful festivals on Lanzarote and is celebrated by
the creation of unique carpets of coloured salt depicting important biblical
scenes.
Even if you are not particularly
religious the imagination, effort and artistry that goes into the unique
creations makes them well worth seeing so mark your itinerary if you are
visiting at this time of year.
