| Canary
Wharf - Docklands Hotels, London: |
|
|
| Canary Wharf in the
London Borough of Tower Hamlets is a large business development on the
Isle of Dogs, centred on the old West India Docks in the London Docklands.
Rivalling London's traditional financial centre, The Square Mile, Canary
Wharf contains the UK's three tallest buildings: One Canada Square (sometimes
known as the Canary Wharf Tower) at 235.1 m; and the HSBC Tower and the
Citigroup Centre joint second tallest at 199.5 m |
| Canary Wharf is built on
the site of the old West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. From 1802 to
1980, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world, with at one point
50,000 employed. Canary Wharf itself takes its name from the sea trade
with the Canary Islands, whose name comes from the dogs (Latin canis) which
the Spaniards found there, producing the linguistic coincidence of trade
between the Dog Islands and the Isle of Dogs. |

East - Tower of London Hotels, London: |
|
|
| Tower of London: Her
Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress The Tower of London, more commonly
known as the Tower of London, is a historic monument in central London,
England on the north bank of the River Thames. It is located within the
London Borough of Tower Hamlets and is separated from the eastern edge
of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. The
Tower of London is often identified with the White Tower, the original
stark square fortress built by William the Conqueror in 1078. However,
the Tower as a whole is a complex of several buildings set within two parallel
rings of defensive walls and a moat. |
 |
| The Tower's primary function
was a fortress, a royal palace and a prison (particularly for high status
and royal prisoners, such as the Princes in the Tower and the future Queen
Elizabeth I). This last use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower" (meaning
"imprisoned"). It has also served as a place of execution and torture,
an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, a mint, a public records office, an observatory,
and since 1303, the home of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. |

| Chiswick is an extensive
district of West London, located within the eastern extremity of the London
Borough of Hounslow and 5.9 miles (9.5 km) west of Charing Cross. The southern
border of Chiswick runs along the River Thames, which is crossed at this
point by Chiswick Bridge, Barnes Railway Bridge and Strand-on-the-Green
Railway Bridge. Before being absorbed into Greater London in 1965, Chiswick
was in Middlesex and formed an urban district from 1894 to 1927. It merged
with Brentford in 1927 to form Brentford and Chiswick Urban District.
The name "Chiswick" is of Old English origin meaning "Cheese Farm" and
originates from the riverside meadows and farms that are thought to have
supported an annual cheese fair on Dukes Meadows up until the 18th century.
Chiswick was first recorded c 1000 as Ceswican. |
| Chiswick is situated at
the start of the North Circular Road and the M4 motorway, the latter providing
a direct connection to Heathrow Airport and the M25 motorway. Chiswick
is also served by the London Underground District Line (Three stations:
Stamford Brook, Turnham Green and Chiswick Park) and two National Rail
lines: the Hounslow Loop Line (from Chiswick and Kew Bridge stations) and
the North London Line (from Gunnersbury and South Acton stations).
The area is not entirely residential: Chiswick High Road is a mix of retail,
restaurants, food outlets and expanding office and hotel space. The wide
streets encourage cafes and restaurants to provide pavement seating, adding
to Chiswick's increasing popularity as a leisure destination. Chiswick
is home to the Griffin Brewery, where Fuller, Smith & Turner brew their
prize-winning ales. |
